We will meet in Victoria Yards, Lorentzville - one of Joburg's newest urban renewal spots where you can check out what's happening in this thriving community. The route described below is mainly for example purposes, as the great thing about being on two wheels is the flexibility it gives. Depending on the group's experience, fitness, and/or enthusiasm levels, it will be very easy to add additional stops. We'll cycle past Ellis Park Stadium and through New Doornfontein to Maboneng. From Maboneng we'll then go through Jeppe and Marshall Town to 1 Fox, checking out some of the great graffiti along the way. From there it's a dash through Newtown, and over the bridge into Braamfontein , where we'll stop and have a drink. We'll discuss the route back during this break, as there are several options that we could do. We could, for example, cycle via Hillbrow, or take the more direct route through the city. The overall distance will depend on the stops, but you're looking at around 12 -15 km.
This tour is led by Emile Kruger, a keen cyclist and owner of 'Whippet Cycling Co,' a well-known vintage bicycle shop in Johannesburg. Since 2013, I have been holding regular social rides for Joburg locals so that they can experience the city on two wheels. There's nothing quite like it, the city is a buzz with an energy that you get to directly experience on ground level. I have an expert knowledge of the city, and will guide you safely to various locations within the CBD. A video of one of our past social rides can be viewed here https://vimeo.com/195004757
Coffee / non-alcohol refreshment
Bicycle and helmet
The route has been chosen as it gives a nice reflection of the city, going through several neighbourhoods and precincts - some with great historical significance. The route starts at one of Joburg's newest spots, a thriving inner city artist studio complex and passes through others (Maboneng, Newtown and Braam). Guests will also be able to see life in the city outside of these regeneration hotspots.
