At the Reflex Letterpress typesetting workshop, we will begin with an introduction to the space and a description of the present letterpress renaissance in Boston. This will lead into a quick overview of letterpress printing, with an examination of its history and the necessity for its development. Next, we will set A2-size monogrammed notecards as an icebreaker project and learn the workings of the Vandercook No 4 proofing press. Finally, we will use lead type and composition tools to set a personalized A2-size calling card. Each attendee will go home with two personalized, hand-printed projects.
The Stove Factory Building is, in fact, a former factory for making stoves. The floors are specially reinforced to take the weight of cast-iron stove bodies, and so is a perfect location for artistic activities of all kinds.
This is a hands-on experience, and letterpress printing is a technical trade that takes some physical involvement. Your hand-made item will, indeed, be hand-made by you!
