体験できること

In the workshop you will learn how to make 2 different preserves; one chutney and one jam.

You will have your own sanitised utensils and equipment and you will be spaced out in the kitchen to allow distance between guests - there will be a maximum of 2 guests booked on any course in the preserving workshop.

Guided by myself through instruction and demonstration you will prepare and process seasonal fruit and vegetables into delicious preserves that you will take home with you at the end of the day.

The day will begin with a tasting session of different types of jams and chutneys. This will be followed by a brief overview of how preserving works, the equipment needed and basic jam/chutney making methods.

You will then cook at your own work station, by induction hob or gas hob, in a friendly, informal atmosphere.

Throughout the day everything you need to prepare and make your preserves will be supplied, including a restorative cup of tea or coffee.

You will make a chutney in the morning followed by a jam after lunch.

Having labelled your preserves, you take home all the jars and chutneys you make.

Lunch offers another opportunity to sample home made food using seasonal produce.

Each workshop is based around ingredients that are seasonally available or preserved through freezing or dehydration.

Dates can be arranged to suit you.

A teacher for over 30 years, my passion now is to teach the art of preserve making by passing on skills taught to me by my mother and grandmother before her. I love nothing more than to spend time on my allotment growing produce to transform into delicious preserves to share with my family and friends. If I am not digging and planting you will find me in the kitchen jamming and canning. I teach people how to make jams, pickles and chutneys, fruit vinegars, liqueurs and cordials. I also keep chickens and bees and generally live the good life in a suburban setting.
I hold the a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering Certificate and pride myself on having exceptional hygiene standards. All equipment will be thoroughly sanitised before and after every event.

実施場所

The Yorkshire Preservatory is based in a bespoke kitchen in an Edwardian house with separate access from the outside. Shallow steps lead down to the workshop across a gravelled garden.
The kitchen is well ventilated with a door that can be opened throughout. There is a toilet for guest use only on the third floor. Sanitiser is available for guest use.
The house is in a quiet cul-de -sac close to woods in a peaceful setting.

The BEST. I was most excited about the jam and chutney making experience as it was my first, and although Sian said I don’t have anything to compare it to, I strongly feel that this is the best experience out there! Sian is very knowledgeable, creative, organised (I don’t know how she does it) and energetic, but above all an extremely caring person with lots of stories and great taste in music. I loved that we made jams and chutneys using seasonal produce, Siam’s workstation is picturesque (the pictures don’t do it justice), Coco and Monty are adorable and Sian and Michael’s team work is inspiring! Although making jam and chutneys is exciting now that I have the skills, I would much rather come back to stock up :) Sian meant every world about taking all that you make home, and I even got a fresh egg from the lovely Martina that laid an egg on the day (also a first!). Lunch and scones with tea were delicious and I will forever be grateful for our conversations (!!!). Thank you so much Sian, Michael, Coco and Monty xxx P.s. I tucked into the jam already xxx

I had such a lovely day with Sian! We made a yummy chutney and a delicious Damson plum jam! She has a great understanding of the jam/ chutney process and is happy to share her knowledge! Sian picked me up and dropped me back at the train station. The lunch she served was healthy and delicious. I would fully recommend this experience to anyone!

What a fantastic experience, I would recommend this to anyone. Sian is lovely and her house, garden and kitchen area is beautiful. I came to this experience without any previous jam or chutney making skills and was able to make some lovely Rhubarb and date chutney and some gorgeous (and very pink) raspberry and gooseberry jam. Sian amended her recipes around my likes and dislikes. It was really hands on and I got loads of tips. I was extremely lucky to be the only one there so I got 1:1 tuition and as we had a bit of extra time there may have been some gin making involved! I had a great lunch of homemade quiche and salad which we were able to sit outside to eat. We had a full day's session and Sian then gave me a lift to the station as I had quite a bit to carry! The only downside is I now need to wait to eat the chutney, but I can have some jam to make up for it.

I booked this as a spur of the moment thing and I'm so glad I did! It was a great day and I learned a lot. Sian is a great teacher, very knowledgeable about jam and chutney making and her enthusiasm is infectious. The structure of the day worked very well, with a mixture of sampling, advice, the sciencey pectin bit :) and of course the actual jam and chutney making, plus a delicious lunch of Sian's home made soup. I was lucky enough to be the only student on the day so I got a great one-to-one experience. I would definitely return for more classes if I lived closer!

I booked this as a birthday present for my mum, as I’d heard great things. We weren’t disappointed, Sian is a really great teacher, and takes the time to explain the whole process. She passionately believes in being resourceful and using local, seasonal produce. Everything’s homemade and delicious, and it made me wonder why I don’t ever cook for myself at home. Sians class instilled me with a desire to do more at home myself and take the same attitude of using local garden produce to make jams and chutneys. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to do a really hands on course and learn a great new skill.

Sian was an amazing teacher. She covered everything and didn’t rush us or leave anything out. We had plenty of lovely jams and chutneys to go home with. She was patient even though we took hundreds of photos. Sian served lovely tea and scones and a delicious lunch. Couldn’t have asked for more, I would recommend to anyone.
