Learning to identify plants is an excellent way to become more connected with our natural surroundings. It's also a valuable skill for mushroom hunting. I will teach you the fundamentals of plant identification, natural history and conservation of native plants, invasive species, and the potential uses of the plants around us.

10-10:15am: We will meet at the Seattle Arboretum and get acquainted. If you have any particular interests or goals, here's your chance to let me know!

10:15-11am: We will take a slow-paced walk from the parking lot heading east on the Loop Trail. I will use this time to discuss and teach the basic techniques for identifying trees, ferns, herbaceous species, and possibly even fungus if we find any! By the end of this walk, you should know what separates a tree from a shrub, moss from a lichen, and an invasive species from a native species. We will start looking at plant morphology, including leaf shape, bark, flower structures, and fruit or cone structures.

11:00-11:45: Next, we will hit the Woodland Garden trail to learn some key native PNW species, head back to the loop trail for more practice, and then walk the Pacific Connections trails to learn more native species and their counterparts in other countries.

11:45-noon: I will spend this time recapping and showing you resources to continue ID'ing with confidence on your own!

I am a naturalist, bird researcher, mushroom hunter, and plant nerd! I have a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Vermont and a Master's in Forest Ecology from Oregon State University. I've been fascinated by plants, wildlife, fungus, and the way they all interact from a young age. I have over ten years of experience with the harvest and use of herbaceous species, berries, nuts, roots, mushrooms, seaweed, and more! I regularly guide birding and foraging trips throughout western Oregon and always focus on conservation, sustainability, and utilization of invasive species. I also teach wild foods cooking and preservation. Let's take a walk!
