We'll meet at City Hall and view stills and clips from “A View to a Kill”, "Milk", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and other classics filmed there. We’ll hop in a van, grab iPads to view clips of the movies, then we're off to Union Square, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, Pac Heights, and many other neighborhoods. We'll see the St. Francis hotel-site of one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood history-and learn all about it. We’ll see filming locations for “Bullitt”, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, "Dirty Harry", "The Conversation", "Just Like Heaven", "The Room", "The Princess Diaries", and many more. We’ll see where Lauren Bacall hid Humphrey Bogart in “Dark Passage”. We’ll look for “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill”. Then to Fort Point, where Kim Novak jumped in the Bay and was rescued by Jimmy Stewart in “Vertigo”. We’ll view Alcatraz and talk about “The Rock”, “Birdman of Alcatraz”, and “Escape From Alcatraz”. Next: the headquarters of Lucasfilm to see Yoda, Darth Vader, lightsabers, costumes and props inside. We pass the Walt Disney Family Museum, then see star's homes and other filming locations where tour buses aren't allowed.
As a cinephile and a San Franciscan of 26 years, I have a deep knowledge of The City's movie history–and I love sharing it! From Chaplin’s work here to this year’s filming schedule, I can fill you in and show you the locations. Fellow film lovers will get a unique thrill when, for example, they stand in the same spot where Jimmy Stewart pulled 'Madeleine' from the Bay in Vertigo, or they view the house where Robin Williams played Mrs. Doubtfire. Watching a clip of Steve McQueen as Bullitt, while sitting in front of his apartment in that movie, makes those Hollywood images feel beyond real.
