Discover the joy of slow travel and cruise a narrowboat on the Oxford canal. Even though we move slowly this is quite an active day where you will get the opportunity to steer the boat yourself and work the locks. No previous experience is required, I am a qualified skipper and have been boating myself for over 20 years and I can show you everything you need to know for you to enjoy the day and stay safe. I have life jackets for you to wear, but I’d prefer it if you don’t fall in! Between the lock action you will see some beautiful Oxfordshire countryside and feel closer to nature. I have bird and tree books on board should we see anything I don’t recognise. Before we depart, I will show you around my boat, that has a flushing loo - in case you are wondering. We will cover some basic safety advice and I will explain the lock system, because you are the crew for the day, so it will be you operating them. You don’t need any previous experience or licenses – I am a qualified skipper and have been narrowboating myself for over 20 years, so I can guide you all the way. The trip should take around 3 hours, but every cruise is a mini adventure and the actual timing will depend on how the weather and how busy the locks are. Please come dressed for British weather and wear either trainers or boots that are safe for getting on and off-board.
Buying a narrowboat has been one of my best life decisions. Nothing makes me smile more than spending some slow time outdoors, taking in all the delights of the UK countryside with friends ... so much so that I left my high stress job to share more boating adventures. I am a fully qualified Helmsman for Inland Waterways and have over 5 years experience hosting people on board my beautiful boat called Giggles. She's called Giggles because you can hear my family laughing all the way down the towpath! My love of canals dates back to my childhood and my own children were on-board a boat as babies. As a Scout leader I enjoy passing on skills and over the years I have picked up lots of canal anecdotes and history to share.
Tea, coffee and soft drinks can be made on-board. There is a hob and small oven should anyone want to warm up food they have…
Lifejackets are offered to anyone who wants one.
Canals give a unique insight into nature and we will cruise through some beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, with some picture postcard villages. The slower pace and the height of the boat really gives you can chance to experience nature close up - if you are lucky, we might see the resident Kingfisher. We will travel through at least 4 locks - which do require a bit of muscle to work in what is an otherwise relaxing activity.
12歳以上の方6名まで参加できます。 I have a dog on-board - I can bring her along or leave her at home depending how guests feel about dogs.
Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes and bring a raincoat. There is a risk you will get oil and mud on clothes from the towpath and locks - so old clothes are best!
