Author and photographer Mathew Duman presents a Safari through Yale University! Yale is a great place to spy a wide variety of grotesques and gargoyles as well as an intriguing case study in Collegiate Gothic architecture.

Your safari begins at Phelps Gate, the gateway to Yale’s “Old Campus”, where we see the grotesques of Bingham and Vanderbilt Halls. We then make our way past the creatures decorating Yale’s Art Gallery, Dwight Chapel as well as 4 of Yale’s Collegiate Gothic residence colleges: John Edwards, Branford (including the elegant Harkness Tower), Davenport and Trumbull. We then proceed by the back of the library, make our way around the Yale Law School then to the main entrance of the cathedral-like Sterling Memorial Library to see the multilingual inscriptions there. We then check out sculpture on Berkeley and Hopper residence colleges and Harkness Hall. We then continue to College Street to see Silliman College as well as the St. Anthony Hall building and ending the tour at Leigh Hall. While this tour focuses on Yale’s Collegiate Gothic architecture, we pass other landmark buildings along the way, such as the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Woodbridge Hall, Woolsey Hall, the gates of Grove St. Cemetery and a few of Yale’s secret societies, including the "tomb" of Skull and Bones!

Being a lifelong resident of the New Haven area, I have grown up exploring the Collegiate Gothic architecture of Yale University. I am a photographer, graphic designer and have published 2 books spotlighting the decorative sculpture of various academic buildings. My first book, “An Education in the Grotesque” showcasing the architectural sculpture of Yale University, came out in 2009. It was then that I began leading walking tours of Yale. I call them “Grotesque Safaris” because I like to say that I’m showing people grotesques and gargoyles “in their natural habitat.” To emphasize this, I lead my tours dressed in a safari outfit! My tours focus on this sculpture, Yale’s Collegiate Gothic architecture and the fascinating stories behind them both. I have since expanded my search for grotesques by traveling to 9 other university campuses.

Yale’s Collegiate Gothic buildings are very theatrical & employ many subtle techniques to enhance your experience of them. Yale’s campus is a dramatic combination of architecture, history, academics, art & culture. Even those who are familiar with the campus will discover surprises as much of this sculpture goes unnoticed! This is because many are hidden in plain sight, so searching out these elusive sculptures is as much fun as appreciating them
