The better shopping is done outside the big malls and designer stores, in the heart of the city's funky and hippie neighborhoods. Our thrift and vintage store exploration takes place in the Hawthorne and Division districts, childhood home of our experience designer, Sarah, and longtime haunt of all our hosts. Walk from Portland's industrial neighborhood to the city's past, from the new era of food cart pods to the style and clothing of long-ago decades. Our first stop is a vintage shop known for its unique acquisitions of clothing and accessories connected to mid- and late-20th century Portland. You might find a letterman's sweater from a 1970s Portland high school, or a fur coat from a local 1940s atelier, or costume jewelry from the 1980s. Walk further east up Hawthorne to a stop at a favorite street food vendor, where we'll snack on a Vietnamese sandwich, BBQ tacos, or veggie-focused nachos, among other possibilities. From here we'll visit a giant consignment store known for its huge variety of vendors and styles; we'll help you navigate to a section where you might find something that suits you ideally. Another consignment store mixes in costumery and flamboyant pieces with its thrift. Our final stop is a surprise, a shop known for its connections to fairies, witches and trolls. Our whole experience is between 2 and 4 miles of walking, with a transit option.
I'm Edwin, co-founder of Portland Urban Adventures, and together with partners & guides Sarah, Madi and Lizzy will host the experiences. I grew up in the Pacific NW, and thrift stores have been part of my life since I was a child. Between my co-hosts and me, we rarely wear more than a few items of clothing purchased retail on any given day. My eyes light up at the thought of a trip to a thrift shop; I have gotten to know consigners by style, and some by name and personality as well. I'm a photographer, and together with my writer partners, we design these tours as a movable narrative. Our concept is to help you explore Portland the way a local would, and take away something amazing to remind you of wandering the funky, hippie streets of our city. More: @ portlandurbanadventures
We'll buy you a substantial snack from one of our favorite food carts along Hawthorne Blvd; choices will vary based on the…
We'll start our walk at the Around Portland Tours shop, 1210 SE 7th Ave, and head east past some of the city's most beloved food cart pods into the funky and hippie neighborhood of Hawthorne Blvd. We'll walk along Hawthorne, and into to the heart of this historic district. Our tour can return to the starting point by transit or by foot, depending on the energy of the guests and the amount of shopping to carry!
A backpack or comfortable tote bag can make your shopping easier
Our walking route is easy, a gentle uphill climb away from the river up Hawthorne Blvd. We suggest comfortable shoes and layers (and jackets) in case of rain. We run tours rain or shine, but contact us if the forecast is truly nasty. We have an option of returning to the shop by transit.
