We’ll start by introducing our alpacas and chickens. We’ll explain what makes alpacas unique, what they like and dislike, and how to approach them. Those desiring a hands-on experience can pet and feed the alpacas and even take one for a walk. (Children can also walk them, but must stay within the fenced area.) Those interested in chickens will have the opportunity to observe, pet, and feed them, including the world’s smallest chicken breed! Questions and pictures are encouraged! Interested guests will also learn about the alpaca fiber-craft of felting , from shearing to finished product. As an optional activity, guests can create a hand-crafted memento to take home. Guests of all ages can interact with the animals. The hands-on activity can be tailored to adults and children of all ages.
I am an alpaca enthusiast and owner. I have always loved animals. I owned horses for many years, beginning at the age of fifteen when I began working as a trail guide. In 2007 I began to study and apply positive, gentle reinforcement training methods and did volunteer work rehabilitating horses. I began working with alpacas in 2011 when a pair of rescued alpacas came to the horse farm where I worked. I was intrigued by these unique animals and soon after I was fortunate to work for three years with a wonderful, knowledgeable mentor at Uinta Alpacas, a large alpaca breeding farm. Soon I had a handful of alpacas of my own, who now live in our backyard. I’m actively involved in the online alpaca community, learning from and sharing with fellow alpaca owners.
I’ll provide treats for the animals and raw materials as well as tools for the hands on fiber activity.
Our tiny residential farm is nestled in the foothills between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Range. We will spend part of the time outside with the animals, and part of the time inside creating your take-home memento. How much time spent doing each will be up to you! Other things nearby: Hiking trails, Antelope Island, horseback riding , the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, the Farmington Bird refuge, Lagoon amusement park, and more!
