Only 10 minutes from downtown Queenstown, we live at Wilson Bay. Stop to enjoy the beautiful calm waters of Wilson Bay and take photos of Walter Peak, Cecil Peak and Mt Nicolas before driving up our driveway to Tui House. You will immediately see and hear our New Zealand songbirds. We will welcome you and give you a guided tour of our property with seasonal flower and vegetable gardens and a greenhouse. We have a stream running through our property which flows for most of the year. You will see tuis, bellbirds and waxeyes feeding on flowers and berries as well as on our feeding stations. Sample our seasonal sprayfree fruit straight from our trees and vegetables straight from our garden. Learn how easy it is to propagate new plants by cutting or division. Enjoy time around our property with unique photo opportunities; although our birds are wild, many of them have been born here, and so long as you are quiet and still, they will carry on feeding with you close by. Look out into the valley for Kereru (NZ wood pigeons), Fantails (Piwakawaka) and if you are lucky, you will see and hear NZ Falcons overhead. See a paua boat and a natural paua shell; Grant commercially free-dived for paua for 23 years. Join us for light refreshments while watching our birds feeding on our feeding stations on our deck, and settle in to learn how to create a uniquely NZ souvenir to take home with you.
Monica and Grant are passionate believers that everyone can make a difference to their environment and to the wildlife and flora that shares it with them. For 17 years, we have cared for wild nectar feeding NZ tuis and bellbirds by cutting down thousands of invasive non-native plants on our property, replanting with native species and supplementing the bird’s feed during lean times. We have learnt which plants supply the best feed for the birds, are experts in propagation, and we have created an environment that the birds thrive in with up to 70 tuis and 60 bellbirds now living in our own micro ecosystem which we have created. Grant and Monica owned paua quota for 23 years which Grant free-dived for. Monica is a keen gardener and artist selling her paua products at the Queenstown markets and she will teach you how to make a paua souvenir.
