We'll get started in the morning with a visit to the world's most legendary race track, Churchill Downs. I'll get you to some great picture spots and tell you the history of the track and why it's an integral part of Louisville. Next we'll traverse the campus of the University of Louisville with it's "Thinker" statue and rotunda reminiscent of Jefferson's Monticello. From there we'll wonder into Old Louisville which is the largest contiguous collection of Victorian homes in America. You'll be stunned by the beautiful architecture and history of these gorgeous dwellings and the gas lit courtyards. As we continue toward downtown we'll see where the boxing career of Muhammad Ali started and discuss his humble beginnings. The revitalized downtown area will follow. We'll discuss the city's earliest days when it was merely a portage town and how it owes it's very existence to the Falls of the Ohio. You'll see where modern skyscrapers meet 19th century construction and learn about the city's love affair with bourbon, America's Native Spirit. On the east side of downtown we'll discover how the neighborhoods are being reborn and where trendy restaurants and hangouts dot the streets. We'll finish up with a trip through Cave Hill Cemetery...sounds morbid but trust me on this one. It'll blow your mind! Lunch at a local restaurant is an option for you as well.
I am the founder of Louisville Fun Tours which is comprised of Trolley de 'Ville and Bourbon Excursions. I've lived in many places and traveled the world but I always come back home to Louisville where I have been offering in-depth tours of the city for over six years now. Operating two successful tour businesses is a pleasure but I am most passionate about sharing my hometown with visitors on a smaller scale. From horse racing to bourbon cocktails and local beers, vibrant neighborhoods to beautiful parks, Victorian architecture to captivating history, Derby City is a wonderful place and I very much enjoy diving head first into it with my guests.
Bottled water and locally made soda will be provided.
Clean and comfortable SUV with leather seating for up to 8 occupants
Churchill Downs is the biggest attraction in town but I'm going to include the neighborhoods around it and how they have changed through the years. In Old Louisville we'll visit places just off the beaten path. Downtown Louisville has lots of spots to point out that even many locals don't know about. And on the east side of town you'll love the walkability of the neighborhoods and especially the visit to famous graves in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Dress for whatever the weather may bring. Unless there is severe weather we will be doing some walking. And feel free to bring any refreshments you may desire. Let me know if you have any special requests.
