When you come to my studio I will give you a brief history of the medium, (its more than two thousand years old), and then demonstrate the encaustic painting process. You will then have the remaining time to paint your own encaustic painting on panel with my guidance. Encaustic is a fascinating medium to paint with. The paint is heated on griddles and it is composed of beeswax, damar resin and pigment for color. The paint is very fast to dry or cool, about three seconds, and a tool is used to scrape, and a torch to fuse the layers together. If you prefer I can always do the torch part for you!
I am a traditionally trained artist who paints with the ancient medium of encaustic. I studied oil painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, but I fell in love with encaustic and have been painting with it exclusively for more than 11 years. I show and sell in galleries, and teach workshops and private lessons. I really enjoy teaching and sharing about it to the professional and to the person who paints or draws a little and is curious about the medium. Even if encaustic is not new to you, you are sure to learn much more! My specialty is painting images. willowbader.com
I will provide all materials for the lesson. You will be standing at the griddles where I work, using my brushes scraping…
You will be coming to my art studio where I make my own work. The studio is in the living room of a 1911 craftsman house where I live in Seward Park area of Seattle.
