You learn about the history of the Jewish District, past and present of the Jewish Community. I show you where was the centre of the Jewish Quarter in the 19th century. You hear the history and developement of Hungarian neologism and interesting stories from that time. You will see the "Synagogue triangle": the Kazinczy, the Dohány (largest in Europe) and the Rumbach Synagogues. I show you the Heroes’ Temple, the monument of the victims of WW2, the Martirs' Cemetery, the Tree of Life. I'll tell you the stories how people could survive in time of holocaust, I show you the Carl Lutz Memorial. Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah or the Festival of Lights is one of the most beautiful and popular Jewish festivals. During the tour you will not only see the most important and some hidden Jewish heritage sights but you will also learn the history of Hanukkah, traditions, rules of dreidel game and you can taste traditional Jewish cake. Why do Jews light 8 candles on their Hanukkah Menorah? Would you like to know why Jews eat fatty food and a lot of cheese during Hanukkah? You can get the answers for these question if you join my walk and we can also join one of the candle lightning ceremonies.
Hello, I'm Brigitta, an enthusiastic tourist guide, specialized in Jewish heritage, organizing private tours for small groups, I've the permission to guide inside the Dohány Synagogue. We will walk in the city like a group of friends. I put my heart and soul into these tours as a member of Jewish family, this means much more for me than just a job. During my tour I will show you not only the main and some hidden sights in the Jewish Quarter, but you will learn about the local Jewish culture, the history of Hanukkah, the traditions and you'll taste a Jewish traditional cake. You'll hear about history and present of the Hungarian Jewish community. I find it important that those who come to Budapest can find accurate and professional guidance. At the end of my tour let's celebrate together at one of the candle lightening ceremonies.
Traditional Jewish Cake
You'll see the main and hidden sights of the Jewish District: Dohány, Rumbach, Kazinczy Synagogues, the Heroe's Temple, the Tree of Life, the Martyr's cemetery, Memorial of Carl Lutz, streets of former ghetto, the only working mikvah, you can taste Jewish cake in a traditional Jewish café and join the Hanukkah candle lightning ceremony. I show you the Gozsdu Udvar, the hidden memorial of ghetto wall and the Pekáry House.
