You will be introduced to a traditional Javanese dance that back in the day would only be performed for specific occasions say, a sacred ritual, or to welcome certain honorable guests, or to celebrate internal events within the royal family. Each movement has its own philosophical meaning underlying almost like an instruction manual for humans in their daily life and how they value nature. Some dances tell of folktales too! The Javanese dance motions are different from either that sensual Sundanese dance or the aggressive Balinese dance with its facial play. A typical Javanese classical dance will also find its way to display the local culture and characters through its famous graceful rhythm.
I have been a professional certified guide in the beautiful town of Yogyakarta for the last 9 years and an avid foodie for much longer. My favorite type of tours are the ones that involve food where my two biggest passion of sharing Javanese culture with the world & of food come together! I started the first street food tour in Yogyakarta and run tours on a daily basis with partnerships with hotels/hostels/guesthouses. I was also approached by Netflix for their latest series 'Streetfood' where Yogyakarta is featured as one of their episodes. I was a 'fixer' of sorts for the crew.
We will start the class in a traditional wooden house in the peaceful countryside away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The venue is fairly accessible from the midtown for you to spend a valuable moment to be a traditional dancer for a day!
