It's simple: every good day in Oregon begins with a hike. And these particular good days continue with locally-made lunch and some of the nation's best wines.
On this experience we approach Oregon's vineyards and wineries through the Columbia River Gorge: the spectacular corridor of waterfalls and expansive views, and with an active approach that gets us all out into the forest before relaxing with wine in the afternoon.
We will start in inner SE Portland, at our shop. We'll drive to the Columbia River Gorge, stopping at a viewpoint to discuss the geology and climate that will serve as context for our hike, and creates the conditions that make Oregon's wine so interesting. We'll compare the AVA (wine growing region) we're about to enter with the one that gets most attention, the Willamette Valley; all with the rocks and rivers before us as our textbook.
From here, we'll visit a few waterfalls, and hike 2-3 miles with some elevation gain (3-5 km), taking time to breathe deeply in the forest; we'll need this experience later for wine tasting!
For lunch, we'll stop at a favorite in Cascade Locks: the best smoked salmon chowder, made with native-caught fish (vegetarian/vegan lunches available). Another beautiful 30-minute drive takes us to two wineries nestled in a lush fruit-growing region. We'll taste a variety of wines before driving back to Portland in time for dinner!
Other things to note
Oregon's wineries have no dress code, so feel free to dress comfortably for outdoor adventuring, including bringing layers (more is better than not enough) and shoes that can handle mud and uneven terrain. We have backup rain gear and water bottles if you forget yours at home!

The location for the entire tour, once we leave Portland in our lux transportation, is the Columbia River Gorge. Famous for its viewpoints, waterfalls, temperate rainforest hikes, salmon-filled river, and fruit-growing region, we'll sample it all! The day will include a morning with a view, a hike to visit a hidden waterfall, lunch in the salmon fishing epicenter, and wine at a few of the best Columbia Gorge wineries in Oregon.
