In this experience, we'll give you a tour of our suburban farm! We have a 600 sqft yard filled with veggies, chickens, honeybees and even two miniature sheep (Marshmallow and Coco)! We'll talk about what we produce with each of our animals and veggie beds, and how they work together in our small space. You'll be able to taste honey from our hives and see how it changes flavors throughout the year. Our heritage chicken breeds produce a rainbow of egg colors, we'll check the coop to see if there are any eggs to collect - you'll definitely be able to see the difference between a store bought egg and one of our farm fresh eggs. Our sheep produce wool, we'll show you how their wool is spun into yarn. Everyone's favorite part - we'll have plenty of time to pet, feed, and take pictures with all of the critters. All of our animals are very friendly, they are our animal ambassadors at local elementary schools, so they are used to interacting with people of all ages. We have the animals behind a gate, so if you would like more space, you can feed and pet them through the fence if it makes you more comfortable. The bees are free to fly about, but there is plenty of space between us and them. Please contact us if you have questions or to see if we have anything special available seasonally! In the spring, and sometimes into the summer months, we occasionally have chicks or young animals.
Kendal has been a backyard farmer in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2011. The first critters in Kendal's suburban farm were bees, with additions every year of chickens and now miniature sheep. Through her nature education business, Sager Family Farm, Kendal brings honeybees, chickens, and sheep into classrooms, presents at local events and fairs, and creates educational installations. Kendal's main goal is to create an appreciation of farming, nature, and our food systems.
Local honey and seasonal veggies.
This class will take place in our suburban farm, which is our backyard! You'll likely be surprised to walk through a completely ordinary neighborhood to find chickens, honey bees, sheep, and veggies living happily in the back. If you've never explored the island of Alameda, it is a fantastic place to visit with beaches, restaurants, wineries and more!
