You'll learn about whiskey in a private Oakland speakeasy amid an enviable collection of spirits from around the world. Is it whisky or whiskey? I'll teach you the differences and give you an overview of the various types of this famous beverage. You'll learn how to read a label and we'll discuss flavor profiles by age, finishes, adding water or ice, and more. The class will be approximately one and a half hours, depending on group size. It will include tasting notes for guests to note appearance, smell, and other comments. There's also a participatory session on reading labels and price points. Don't be fooled by marketing. All you need to know is on the label. Other topics of interest include the history of whiskey and women, how to create a tasting flight, barrel-aging cocktails, and other spirits, such as gin, tequila, and rum. Upon completion of the class, you will be my guest to taste what you've learned, compliments of your host. All are welcome! This is not a women only experience.
"I drink and I know things." I've traveled all over the world touring distilleries and wineries. I started collecting in 2008 with a few bottles of bourbon and have grown my private collection to over 300 bottles. In 2015, I got my CSS—Certified Specialist of Spirits—designation from the Society of Wine Educators. I am a Certified Bourbon Steward. I have taught over 1500 people on whiskey education to groups and corporations, but mostly enjoy hosting women who want to learn what all the whiskey buzz is about. In November 2018, I became President of the Seattle and Bay Area chapters of a global social club called Women Who Whiskey. Check out my website to see more info: http://bourbonmaven.com
Light snacks will be provided throughout the Experience. Let your host know of any allergies please.
Surrounded by repurposed redwood and the caramel scent of bourbon, we will conduct our class in my private home speakeasy in Oakland.
