This is your call to adventure! Our ranch is nestled in the mountains above Napa Valley, dappled with oaks and redwoods. As you drive up the winding narrow roads, take in the fragrance of trees and notice the terraced vineyards along your journey. When you arrive, we’ll have light refreshments on the deck and you can tell me about your expectations, emotions, goals, or fears in regards to horses and writing. This conversation will help me choose the writing prompts. We will walk down to meet the horses, let them come to us (which they will!) and begin our writers workshop. I call this writing with the herd experience, "Meet me at the Gate" because you will be inspired to write while here, and what you take away on your own may be your call to new adventures. Science has proven that the physical act of writing with pen and paper exercises different learning pathways in the brain than writing on your laptop. I will guide you through 3 writing prompts as well as equine guided activities. Would you like to halter and lead the horse, bathe, walk through obstacles together, or practice activities at liberty? These are all possible! To close our session we will return the horse to his paddock or pasture, then relax with more refreshments and a final writing prompt, focusing on the peaceful heart-to-heart connection that was established today.
I have taught kindergarten through high school and my favorite subjects to teach are the Language Arts and Mindfulness. In fact, I taught High School English for over two decades! I’m a member of Napa Valley Writers and participate in workshops and writers groups. I’m trained in the “Let Animals Lead” method of Reiki with Animals, and also teach the Mindful Schools Curriculum. Mustang Yogi, adopted from the BLM in 2003 is now twenty years old, and has helped me earn my US Dressage Federation Bronze Medal. He’s my heart horse and dance partner in showing Musical Freestyles at competitions as well as exhibitions. I have taken clinics from Linda Tellington Jones, Manolo Mendez, and mentees of the late classical dressage masters Miguel Tavora and Egon von Neindorff. Welcome to the sanctuary of the stable and pasture for this writing workshop.
Organic fruit, nuts, and bakery treats will be set out. Notify me in advance of your visit regarding allergies.
Join me at Brioso Vineyard Stables on Mount Veeder. We are located off of a steep, winding road, at 2,680 feet. Our area is known for grapes grown on volcanic hillsides. All three of our horses have faced and overcome emotional and physical challenges. Meet gorgeous Pura Raza Espanola Andalusian (PRE) youngster Brioso, Mustang Yogi, our wise leader, and welcome the newcomer Lusitano Arteiro.
The energy here is safe, supportive. All are welcome in this writing space. If you do not have your own favorite journal to bring along, I'll provide some composition booklets, pens, and pencils. If you feel you'd prefer to write on your laptop or tablet, that's just fine too. Wifi is limited.
