We will take a day trip to Stonehenge, stopping at some lesser known archaeological sites on the way. Early in the morning (or not so early if you'd prefer!) I will pick you up from Bermondsey station or Lambeth station in London and drive you to Salisbury Plain. This will take about 2-3hrs. We will visit Stonehenge and I will give you a personal tour of the site, including its archaeological history, and invite you to ask whichever questions you've always wanted to ask an archaeologist! We will have a good lunch at the Stonehenge cafe and refresh for the second stage :) After this, I will take you to some of the lesser known prehistoric sites on Salisbury Plain, such as West Kennet Long Barrow, Silbury Hill, Woodhenge, Danebury hill fort, or, if we have time, Avebury and the ceremonial Avenue of stones. We will then head back to London, and I will provide light snacks on the way, to arrive back around 7pm.
Hi! I'm Dr Kingwell-Banham, PhD, but you can call me Ellie. I've been an archaeologist for over ten years and I would love to share my passion and intrigue with the past with you. I have visited the sites that we will go to hundreds of times, but am still blown away by how fascinating they are whenever I go. Every year archaeologists are uncovering something new about the people of ancient Britain, and I want to share this with you.
I will provide some snacks for the drive, such as fresh fruit, biscuits, finger sandwiches. All dietary requirements can be…
I will provide bottles of water for the journey, as well as flasks of tea for when we visit sites in the afternoon.
I will drive you in my car. It's a true archaeologist's car- a slightly shabby 2004 Ford Focus! If you prefer, I can arrange…
We will visit the fabulous and iconic Stonehenge, the ancient monument and temple built nearly 4000 years ago. We will explore the beautiful countryside of England, picking out the ancient archaeological sites that cover this landscape as we go. Every one of the sites that I would like to share with you is in a really special location within the landscape, so you will get some amazing photos and incredible views.
The English weather can be a little unpredictable, but don't worry! I know lots of places that we can go to stay out of the rain, like the Salisbury Museum which has a fantastic archaeology gallery (https://www.salisburymuseum.org.uk/collections/wessex-gallery)
