We meet at either St George's tower or a mutually agreed place and walk through the city for 2 hours. Walking past Whitefriars to St Thomas' church we stop to hear his story before continuing to Butchery Lane. We walk down The Parade and towards the cathedral down Mercery Lane. We stroll through Sun Street to Rushmarket passing Conquest House and Mint Yard gate. Wandering through the narrow streets we reach the Blackfriars, hear about Christopher Marlowe and towards Greyfriars where we spot the Westgate. We complete the tour by Eastbridge Hospital and Geoffrey Chaucer statue on the High Street.
I'm a ITG ( Institute of Tourist Guiding) qualified and registered Green Badge guide for Canterbury. I have lived in Fordwich, Britain's smallest town for almost two decades and am a custodian and trustee for its medieval town hall. I have lived and studied in Sweden, Germany and USA and spent extended periods in Denmark. I am passionate and enthralled with the history of Canterbury and cannot wait to show off this stunning cathedral city to you. Whether you have lived here all of your life, have just arrived or are just passing through, there are buildings and sites to explore with fantastic stories waiting to be told. Join me for a relaxed, fun and entertaining walk around the city. If you have a special interest or would like a themed tour eg. Vikings, Romans, art or literature or want to meet up elsewhere, let me know.
Each stop along the way will paint a picture of Celtic, Roman, Norman, Medieval and Modern Canterbury. The history of this stunning city does not present itself in a chronological order and needs a good level of decrypting, using the sites and buildings that we will see on our walk as tools to unearth each century and major event.
Check the weather on the day and dress appropriately. We will walk and stand for two hours so please ensure that you will be warm/cool enough. Consider bringing something to drink and snack. Definitely bring your camera!
