Meeting at the Montrose Ave L Subway Station we will begin our tour with a guided walk through some of Bushwick's most colorful and inspiring street art while passing by (and through) some of my favorite galleries, cafes, underground venues and local spots. Throughout our walk we will dive deep into Bushwick culture, discussing what life is like on this side of the city, how and why Bushwick went from being one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America to one of its most thriving, progressive artist communities, the differences between life/culture in Brooklyn vs. Manhattan and the other boroughs and the unbelievable transformation of this little slice of NY I get to call home. Along the way we will pass by some of New York's best (and widely unknown) thrift shops, warehouses, coffee shops and breweries and make our way to Brooklyn's crown jewel of street art: The Bushwick Collective, before heading to the one and only House of Yes all-purpose venue, which, depending on the day and hour, we will have the opportunity to go inside and participate in the event taking place. House of Yes is a staple of Bushwick/Brooklyn life and has given thousands of New Yorkers (including my friends and me) a safe space/haven to truly be themselves in a world that often shuts them down for not being, looking or thinking a certain way. We will finish the tour near Jefferson Ave Station.
My name is Carly and I am a passionate, knowledgeable and energetic licensed NYC Tour Guide who's been residing in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the neighborhood we'll be touring, since I first moved to New York City in 2017 after backpacking around the world for 2+ years. Seeking an open-minded, diverse, alternative, artistic and intellectual community, Bushwick has been everything I could've hoped for and more, and I feel very privileged to have spent my last few years experiencing so much of what Bushwick has to offer. From eclectic underground electronic music parties to ethnic vegan food restaurants, to entire avenues covered in street art, people from around the world, community spaces, and an entirely unique Bushwick culture I've come to embrace and love, I can't wait to show you an alternative side and story of New York most people miss.
House of Yes admission (depending on the day and event of the scheduled tour)
From start to the end, we will be walking through the East Williamsburg/Bushwick neighborhoods where we will stop at or pass by some of my favorite local spots including the street art near Meserole Street, The Well, FRIENDS NYC, Roberta's Pizza and the area surrounding Morgan Ave, the Bushwick Collective (one of the world's most famous and colorful public outdoor galleries), KCBC, House of Yes (Timeout's #2 Thing to Do in the World) & lots more
