The striking mountain of Montserrat is less than an hour's drive from Barcelona airport, where we'll meet you and escort you in a private vehicle to enjoy a great morning's birding away from the bustle of the city. This activity is especially recommended for couples, as in our experience one of the couple is often the birder, and the other his/her companion. With this itinerary we can drop the non-birder off at the Montserrat rack railway, and with a return ticket (included on prior request) they can enjoy the ride up and down to the monastery and still have about 2 hours to walk around and enjoy this inspiring location. Meanwhile, the birder of the two will be escorted to nearby areas to enjoy some of the birds of the rocky slopes, pine wood, olive groves and more to be found in this area. There is even the possibility of seeing Spanish Ibex! Depending on the time of the year we could see birds such as Alpine Swift, Crag Martin, Blue Rock Thrush, Hoopoe, Green Woodpecker, Firecrest, Western Bonelli's Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Golden Oriole, Bee-eater and much more! At the designated time we will return to the rack railway station to pick up the non-birding partner and return to Barcelona airport, where the activity ends. Please note: it is not obligatory for anyone to visit the monastery but at least one of the couple must be interested in the birding!
I'm a life-long birder with a degree in ecology and over 30 years of residence in northeast Spain. My passion for birds and wildlife led me to found Birding In Spain, helping visitors to enjoy the rich birdlife of Spain in a relaxed, holiday atmosphere and using the best of our extensive knowledge about where and how best to visit this part of the world. I'm the author of 2 books on birds and birding in Spain and over the years I have made many friends from among the people I have accompanied into the field.
Light snacks available in the vehicle
Water and juice available in the vehicle
You will be driven in a private vehicle
Binoculars can be provided for the activity upon prior request. The guide will also have his own telescope.
We will be starting at the rack railway station at Monistrol Vila, and from there will go birding around the ragged and iconic southern faces of the Montserrat mountain in a combination of short sorties on foot and driving along roads and tracks.
Please come prepared for an informal outdoor environment, a little less so if you are planning to visit the monastery. Please note that the birding experience is in pursuit of the observation of wild birds and other wildlife and that we do not take people to zoos or the like
