We will meet at Equator Coffee in downtown Mill Valley to grab a coffee, plan out our hike, and make sure everyone is prepared with snacks and water. We will then begin along the famous Dipsea Trail and hike up over 600 stairs before we reach the first peak (Windy Gap). From here, we will make our way down towards Muir Woods but won't enter the park just yet. We will continue up the Dipsea Trail and gain about 1200 feet until we get to the top of Cardiac Hill, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Here, we may be lucky enough to see whales breaching in the distance. Along the way we will most likely see red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, snakes, lizards, and an assortment of other wildlife. Once we've had lunch and caught our breath, we will come back thru Muir Woods, home to some of the largest redwood trees in the world and where movies such as Star Wars and Planet of the Apes were filmed. We will then finish back at Mill Valley Beerworks for some well-earned refreshments. This hike is a local favorite and considered one of the most beautiful in America, and I look forward to sharing it with you! Mileage: 10 miles / 16 km Time: 5-6 hours
I am a San Francisco native and have hiked the trails of Marin my whole life. I have hiked all over the United States and various international countries including Peru, Argentina, Iceland, Sweden, Canada, Mexico, Thailand and Vietnam. While I have seen many beautiful places in the world, I still think that Mt. Tamalpais has some of the best trails and they are right in the backyard of San Francisco. I look forward to sharing my favorite trails with you!
Water. Please bring your own water bottle to refill along the way.
The Dipsea Trail is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in America and runs from downtown Mill Valley out to the Pacific Ocean. The trail consists of 688 steps (in the first mile) and long uphill stretches for nearly 2,000 feet in total elevation gain. Dedicated to John Muir (the father of the national parks) in 1908, Muir Woods is home to some of the largest redwood trees on the planet.
This experience is best if you can commit to at least 6 hours. We can shorten it if needed, but the hike is a morning well spent and is most enjoyable if we are not rushed!
