On arrival you will be welcomed by me, tenant farmer of Carcant farm and I will give an introduction that covers our work on the farm and explains what is involved in the demonstration, an explanation and demonstration of how we communicate with our dogs using their language. You will then move to the enclosed viewing area where I will work and describe how I communicate with my young dogs using just body language and gestures, demonstrating how to control the hunting instincts and utilize their energy in to a working method that shows empathy for the sheep. I will work with different dogs to show each step of training, while explaining why using pressure & release works and how important hierarchy is in the working dog. I will show how I teach my dogs to use their brain and think for themselves along with teaching associated commands. I will also explain how working with my method “The Natural Way” creates a willing partnership. After covering basic and intermediate stages I will bring out my fully trained dogs, demonstrating the value of these tremendous dogs as I replicate working situations what these dogs do every day. To finish the demonstration I will work with two main dogs together as a team demonstrating the true teamwork and partnership I have with my dogs. At the end there will be time for refreshments and to socialize with the dogs!
My name is Julie Hill and I am a tenant farmer in the Borders of Scotland. Carcant is a traditional run sheep farm. Please ask for other dates as sometimes I can work around farm chores to offer a demonstration. For the last 40 years I have dedicated my life to understand and working with these amazing dogs. I have a Canine communication certificate and won the highest level of competition. Awards include Scottish & International Champion in Sheepdog competition in both singles and doubles. I made history becoming the first and only woman up to date in 113 years of the International sheepdog society founding to have won the prestigious award of International Supreme championship in both single and brace competition held for the whole of Britain! I have written 2 books and produced 2 DVDs sold worldwide explaining my methods.
Tea, coffee & biscuits are available throughout the demonstration on a help yourself basis.
You will travel through the beautiful moor foot hills on your journey to the farm. As you drive down the avenue you are surrounded by hills and sheep grazing. A little piece of heaven hidden in the valley! Pedigree Cheviot sheep graze the Carcant hills, running up to 1000 head including lambs throughout the summer months. The terrain on the higher ground dictates the need for such great dogs.
18歳以上の方10名まで参加できます。保護者同伴の2歳未満のお子様も参加可能です。 Guest should be comfy around dogs. Not worry if they get a little dirty.
Suitable clothing & footwear for the countryside for all types of weather. The farm is a 1000 feet above sea level so wrap up warm as you can always take layers off.
The farm is easy accessible by car or bus. The demonstration is held in the field by the house where there is a seating area for those less able. Toilets are in the farm yard. The yard is hardcore but it’s still best to dress for walking in a grass field, so wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
