You'll start off by learning about the basics of the honey bee, their process for making honey, their social structure, how they communicate and the season After a brief orientation to the bees and an overview of the parameters how to safely interact with them, you'll get the opportunity to suit up, light up the smoker and head to the apiary for a peek inside the colony. We'll leave the inspection with a sample of honeycomb with which we will use my grandfather's antique handmade honey extractor to exhibit the process of harvesting honey. Follow along centuries of tradition with this one of a kind experience and leave the farm with more than just a sweet memory!
I'm a third generation beekeeper and farmer at Wild Russet Farm in the Sullivan Catskills. I've been carrying on the family tradition of tending bees using equipment passed down through my grandfather. Ever since I was a kid I had fascination with the ways of the honey bee. After farming & beekeeping for nearly a decade, I am so excited to be able to share my knowledge of the magical world of the honey bee with you. From their social structure to hidden means of communication, to creating a living food product that is virtually incapable of spoiling, it is my hope that through this experience I can pass on the wonder of the honey bee to you.
